4 October - Part 1 - Rooiels and Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens

Quite a drive today for our day trip as we moved through Cape Town, east across the townships in Mitchell's Plain before turning south for a spectacular coastal drive along the eastern flank of False Bay. Rooi-Els was our first destination; an area of rocky coastline with a thin equally rocky heath covered coastal strip before a steep sloped high ridge. It was spectacular scenery with excellent birding and as Mike put it quietly as we were leaving, ' We could not have done better'.
Rooiels

We had one major target species here and a number of slightly more minor ones and we achieved great success. The target was Cape Rockjumper and the strategy was to simply listen and watch for these active birds as they worked their way over the stony slopes.
